NAKED
Tony - Solo and Acoustic
"Sometimes I get the feeling that all that sound gets in the way of the music". A surprising statement from an Artist who can boast of having conquered many of the largest open-air stages in Europe, as well as having recorded four albums with some of the world's best musicians. But Swiss-based American singer-songwriter Tony Lewis seems to have a knack for coming up with the unexpected. The current hairpin curve on his musical journey is his decision to record a solo-acoustic album, "Naked".
If the "one voice, one instrument" concept conjures up visions of long-haired folkies droning away in smoky coffee houses, this record surprises with its extremely varied styles and textures. Performing on the Spanish, bottleneck, 6 and 12 string guitars, piano, mandolin, harmonica and even the East Indian dholak, Lewis covers a wide-range of musical genres, while staying true to his bluesy-country roots. There's even a refreshing do-wop version of his R&B-ish "Baby It's You".
Lewis, known up to now in the European Country music scene as an uncompromising performer and songwriter, is ready to take his music to a wider public. With the upcoming release of "Naked", the native Californian mixes the honesty of Country music together with the urgency of the Blues, and then throws in a pinch of Jazz for spice. Although it certainly has its lighter moments, this is an album to be enjoyed quietly in good company, warmed by candlelight and a good red wine. The listener will be rewarded with raw emotions, directly transmitted by "one voice, one instrument". As Lewis himself puts it, "I wanted to make a record that doesn't rely on arrangements and production, but rather on songs and soul".
