![]() Country Music Switzerland - December 2002 Auf zu neuen Lieben Country News (August '02) Col-des-Roches Festival June 22, 2002 TONY LEWIS & THE SHOOTERS - Tony Lewis is still enchanting his audiences. Very professional, but at the same time always friendly with everyone, be it the press, the technicians, the festival workers or the public. It's he who boosted the temperature and brought the evening's atmosphere to its highest level… A few of his hits, some titles from his latest albums, and then grabbing a Dobro (an instrument that we're not really used to seeing in his hands), he performed a country blues which gave us goose bumps. The good thousand spectators were not mistaken in giving Tony a standing ovation in return for holding them spellbound during the entire length of his show. The variation in textures and rhythms was well chosen, as he made the rounds of the different currents in Country Music. Tony spoiled his audience, which was intent and delighted… and maybe even a little sad that it had to end… Claude Rossier
Born: Anthony Edward Lewis, March 7, 1956 in Long Beach, California, Tony Lewis has made Switzerland his home since 1991. For this, his 5th album, Tony has taken a completely new direction. It resulted from a 2 month stay in a primitive cabin out on the northern New Mexican desert. "NAKED" is an intimate solo acoustic work of mainly original compositions whose strength lies in songs and soul, rather than production and arrangements. Of the 13 tracks on the album, 10 are either written or co-written by Tony, with the others consisting of an excellent re-working of "The Streets Of Laredo," plus "Across The Borderline," a song co-written by Ry Cooder and John Hiatt that you may remember was recorded by Willie Nelson a few years ago. Tony certainly does the song justice here as he turns in a great version with just his guitar for accompaniment. The other 'foreign' track here is "A Song For You," written by Leon Russell. Opening up the album, the song, which is new to me, is done with only piano for accompaniment. Of the self penned songs I particularly like the mandolin driven, "When There's No One Around," a song written in 1986, so it may have appeared on an earlier album with a full production. and the acapella, "Baby It's You," complete with Doo-Wop's and finger clicks. Tony shows his mastery of the French language in "A Chaque Carrefour," while on the 25th anniversary of his first concert, he went back to the same place to record 'Live' "What You Need" a song in which Tony wrote the words and guitar genius Luis Borda provided the music. "Naked" is an album of what I would call 'late night music.' There are no fancy production techniques here, just 13 songs standing on their own with a very sparse accompaniment. Pour yourself a beer, sit back and 'chill out!'
Country Gazette - nr. 299 - November 2000. Jaap Stad
"One of the pleasures of working on D4U is that from time-to-time you get sent a new record (or two) for review, and it's a real pleasure to come across a good record from someone you've not heard of before. Such was the case with Tony Lewis. Now I'm one of those record reviewers who couldn't care less where a record comes from. Stick it on the hi-fi and listen to what comes out. However, I know of one northern magazine that dismissed the record out of hand and belittled the fact that it had a Swiss reference. That person should be be relieved of all future reviewing work. If they'd only taken the cotton wool from their ears and listened a bit more intently to the music, they would have found that Tony Lewis is as talented as many of the current Nashville warblers- and more talented than quite a few of them. I've since listened to more of his work and those first impressions have been confirmed - musical influences from Country, R&R, Swing and the gutsy R&B sounds of Van Morrison come out at me as I listen, and you can't help wondering 'where the heck has this guy been all this time'?".

"PORTRAIT"
Born and raised in the United States, singer/songwriter Tony Lewis has, since 1991, called Switzerland his home... His current release, "PORTRAIT", is a 16-song compilation of the best tracks from these earlier albums, plus two previously unreleased tracks. Although he has released three albums previous to this compilation, Tony Lewis is a totally new name to me. All I can say after listening to this brilliant album is, WHY? Tony writes some terrific story songs in the way all good country songs should be written, and he's also a pretty good singer to boot. There is absolutely no doubt that many of the songs on this CD will find their way onto the Metro Country playlist, and it is already down for album of the week on next weeks show. Tony is looking to get himself known in the UK, and with the right promotion I can't see him having very much trouble. He would certainly go down well in the line dancing clubs, which is where a lot of his music is obviously aimed, although the lyrics he writes would ensure that he also found favour with listening audiences. The album opens with "Boot Scootin' Mademoiselle" a song that is certain to have the dance floors full. I don't dance, but I couldn't keep my feet still while listening to this one. This is followed by my favourite track on the album. "You Are The Dream", one of the two previously unreleased tracks here, is a great country shuffle that I just can't stop playing. It's worth the price of the album for this one alone and should certainly be considered for release as a single. Tony rocks it up with "Ain't Dead Yet" while later slowing things down for "Lonesome, Lonely and Alone", a song that Tony admits to fantasizing about George Jones and Travis Tritt recording. I must admit, as I listened to this, I could hear George and Travis too. Tony gets into Cajun mood next with the other previously unreleased track here, "Bad Case Of Love", another song that is sure to fill the dance floors. "When I've Forgotten To Remember You" a great play on words, written in collaboration with Nashville songwriter Mary Perreault, is a story of trying to forget the memory of a past love. Another one certain to please the line dancers is "That Was Someone Else You Saw", an amusing song with a strong beat all about getting caught out and trying to pretend it was someone else. A beautiful ballad follows as Tony sings a song written from personal experience. "Not Too Much More To Say" is another song of lost love and another of my favourite tracks on the album. Back in a rockin' mood for "Sittin' Here Fishin'", a song taken from Tony's first album, and one that he credits Hank Sr with for the inspiration. "Baby It's You" is very much R&B influenced, while on "Back Home Again" Tony is joined by Stella Parton on a song he wrote specially with her style in mind after she accepted his request to do a duet with him. "Mississippi Crossing" is a country rocker very much in the style of Sawyer Brown, while "Two More Pairs Of Feet" is taken at such a fast pace, you would need two more pairs of feet to dance to it. Some great playing from the musician's on this one. "Drivin' Her Out Of My Mind" is a great story song that has a truck driver telling of the night he fell for a woman he picked up at a truck-stop, only for her to have gone when he woke the next morning. The style of this song reminded me very much of Alan Jacksons, "Midnight In Montgomery". Another country rocker "Make A little Noise" is a true story of two personal biker friends, Ziggy & Karen. The story tells of how they met, fell in love, and how Ziggy died on his bike one rainy night. The song ends with Karen attacking his family at the funeral, saying, they didn't care when he was around, and ending with the lines; "You Know It Almost Makes Me Sorry
Terrific!
I Won't See Your Face Again As She Roared Off On Her Harley There Began A Gentle Rain" The album closes with "Wanted Man" a song with a Jazz feel to it, and another song written from personal experience. I can't recommend highly enough that you visit Tony's website, where you can find out all about this talented singer/songwriter, who would appear to be Switzerland's best kept secret, at least as far as we in Britain are concerned, and also listen to some sound clips from the CD.
